As it turns out – as it so many times seems to turn out in these kinds of things – the people supposedly in the know really didn’t know after all. And so it was, too, in this mess swirling about Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson.
But the smart people who didn’t boast about being in the know, knew all along that what has happened, would happen.
The people supposedly in the know kept talking about Watson being handed by the NFL a punishment of four games, six games, eight games and maybe even 10 games, though that was considered an extreme, they said – for his lewd acts, criminal or not, regarding all those massage therapists.
And now that we have learned that the punishment will likely be at least an entire season, all the people supposedly in the know are aghast. How can this be? How did they miss the mark by so much?
Perhaps because they were never in the know in the first place, and they have no common sense.
Meanwhile, the smart people who never claim to be in the know, aren’t surprised in the least bit. They knew all along that something like this would happen to Watson because they could plainly see that this was something the likes of which the league has never witnessed before. This wasn’t just one act of sexual misconduct, or two or three or even four, but dozens and dozens and dozens, comprising a list as far as the eye can see. This was incredible – and not at all in a good way, either. It was unbelievable.
These smart but not boastful people never thought in their wildest dreams that Watson would be suspended just four games, six games, eight games or 12 games. They knew that this guy would be gone for at least the entire season. It just made sense – common sense.
They knew that the NFL had no choice but to do so, for if the punishment is to fit the crime, then this is what the penalty had to be. Anything less than that would make the NFL appear to be morally tone deaf and would thus be a huge public relations problem for the league.
