Remembering Tom Goosby

TOM GOOSBY PASSED AWAY AND HARDLY ANYONE NOTICED

By STEVE KING

I’ve mentioned any number of times that on this site, brownsdailydose.com, readers will find news and topics – and angles on news and topics – that you’re not going to find anywhere else.

After all, if I were writing what everyone else was writing, what purpose would that serve? You’ve got to stand out to get noticed, ad, like any other website – or any other venture, business or otherwise, period – we want to get noticed here. You have to get noticed. If you don’t, then you eventually go away. You’re out of business.

Today’s post is a good example of that – unfortunately so.

Here’s what I mean:

Tom Goosby, a backup offensive guard on the 1964 NFL champion Browns, has died. He passed away about a week and a half ago, on June 25. He had turned 79 years old about a month before his death.

If you knew Tom Goosby’s story, then you knew this was going to happen.

What is “this?,” you might ask.

Good question.

“This” – partly so, at least — is that Tom would pass away with comparatively little fanfare, including none from the Browns, who have either forgotten about him or didn’t even know who he was. Whatever the case, that’s really sad.

An obituary in the Akron Beacon Journal, with no mention of his connection to the Browns, is the only place where his death has been mentioned. That’s really sad as well.

The rest of “this” is that I wanted to make sure that Tom’s obituary listed him as a member of the champion Browns 54 years ago. That was a big deal to Tom, and he deserves that recognition – that honor. He’ll get it here. As for receiving it anywhere else, I have absolutely no idea.

But I would doubt it.

I’ll explain fully in my next post.

  1. Steve, Rich C here
I read your post and thought I’d send you the research that Dino had me do

You are right about him playing in 1964… he played 3 snaps as a LB in the “Runner up bowl” in Miami as a final game for 1963 ( which was in 1964 ) just not in the 1964 season…

The rest of his history is below

Thomas Aaron “Tom” Goosby 1963 Cab Sqd G & MLB #65 6′ 235 Baldwin – Wallace Waived 9/3- Then Cab Sqd till 10/17 then called up

    Thomas Aaron “Tom” Goosby 1963 Reg G & MLB #62 6′ -235 Baldwin – Wallace 2 games DNP — 10/19 vs Eagles w/ Sczurek & 10/27 vs NYG – then released-
    resigned as a reserve 1/4/64 & played 3 snaps

For 1964, the data is as follows:

Thomas Aaron “Tom Goosby 1964 before camp LB #64 6′ 235 Baldwin – Wallace Signs 1 yr deal 5/3/64-

    Pre Season LB #64 6′ -235 Baldwin – Wallace
Injured knee on “Monster”/ sled 7/15/64

    Pre Season LB #64 6′ -235 Baldwin – Wallace
Waived 8/25/64 – he is not picked up on waivers—

He later in the season had a tryout with the Wash. Redskins, but was not signed

    1965
He signs another 1 year contract on 3/5/65
He quits and leaves camp on 8/2/65 before the All-Stars vs the Browns on 8/5/65
