NO NEWS IS NOT REALLY GOOD NEWS IN GARRETT’S ASE

There’s still no word on just how badly hurt, or not, rookie defensive end Myles Garrett is after injuring his left foot on Wednesday in the Browns’ full-squad mini camp.

There was supposed to be word on Thursday as the three-day event ended – that’s what the Browns said on Wednesday – but the day came and went with no real update other than a statement from the club that he was still being evaluated.

Head coach Hue Jackson was not scheduled to do his normal daily interview with the media on Thursday. Instead, assistant coaches were able to be interviewed, and to the surprise of absolutely, positively no one, assistants who were asked about Garrett’s status declined to comment. They would have been fired on the spot.

Indeed, woe to any underling coach who talks to the media about injuries. That has to come from the head coach, and sometimes not even him. Rather, in some instances, it comes from higher up, in the Browns’ case, that being Executive Director of Football Operations Sashi Brown. But he was not commenting, either.

Who knows when we might hear about Garrett? But the longer we go without an answer, the more we get the semblance of one: that is, this guy may well be hurt to some degree of seriousness.

The Browns will be off for about six weeks until the important part of the year starts with the opening of training camp in a yet-to-be-announced date in late July. So on that first day of camp – whenever it turns out to be – Garrett and the Browns are going to be besieged with inquiries about his health.

And if he’s not ready to go by that time, then it’s going to be the story of the year. After all, he was the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft.

It was also the biggest story of the mini camp – by far. That the Browns don’t have a clear answer for his status, serves to only make the story bigger. Nothing else – not even what happened at the all-important quarterback position – mattered in comparison.
