HUE TELLING IT LIKE IT IS, IS GOOD

By STEVE KING

We can debate all day about Hue Jackson’s ability to be head coach of the Browns (I remain firmly behind him while a good friend, My Gal Val, wanted him canned months ago), but there can be no debate about the man’s honesty and truthfulness.

And that counts a lot, too, especially after a game like the one on Sunday when the Browns got hammered 38-14 by the Los Angeles Chargers and both media members and fans demand answers – not junk, terse or, worse yet, coach-speak-like responses like the ones we got from people like Eric Mangini and Pat Shurmur, but real, legitimate answers – to some tough but crucial questions. Again, Hue telling it like it is, is good.

And that’s exactly what Jackson provided Monday as he met with the media. He wasted no time in laying it out there and being real.

“Obviously, yesterday is not where we want to be. Do not want to play that way,” Jackson said in his opening statement. “I do not have an excuse for it. As I told you guys yesterday, I am not going to make excuses for our football team. We did not play well. That starts with me. All the way down, we have to get better. We recognize that.

“It was disappointing in front of our fans. Even if we are on the road, that is not the way that we want to play. That is not the football team that I envision us becoming. We need to continue to work and do the little things at all times that give us a chance to win. We broke down fundamentally in a lot of different places yesterday.”

He later added, “I think defensively it was not one of our better performances by any stretch of the imagination and not just one player – all guys. Call it like it is, we did not play well defensively. We did not play well offensively, either.”

Nobody wants to lose. There’s only one thing worse than losing, and that’s not dealing with it.

So let’s give Hue Jackson credit for at least that, OK?
