10 QUESTIONS ON THE QUARTERBACKS FOR THE BIG GUYS

Here are 10 important questions about the quarterback situation for head coach Hue Jackson and Executive Vice President of Football Operations Sashi Brown as the Browns get ready to host the New York Giants in a nationally-televised game on Monday night at FirstEnergy Stadium:

*1. If Brock Osweiler, the starter for the game, plays well, then does he automatically win the starting job heading into the regular-season opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sept. 10?

*2. And if he doesn’t play well, after also not performing well in the preseason opener against the New Orleans Saints back on Aug. 10, does Osweiler automatically lose the job to rookie DeShone Kizer?

*3. If Osweiler plays well and Kizer, who performed well in the opener and will be the No. 2 quarterback against the Giants, also excels, then who starts the third preseason game at Tampa Bay on Aug. 26? That is the third preseason contest, which, for every team every year in this day and age, is the always the dress rehearsal for the regular season. Jackson said whomever starts that game will likely be the starter against Pittsburgh.

*4. If Osweiler plays well but Kizer plays better, does Kizer win the job based on the fact that he would have played better than Osweiler twice in as many games?

*5. What happens – who starts — if both quarterbacks stink up the place?

*6. Is there any possible way – maybe the one mentioned in No. 5 – in which Cody Kessler, providing he plays well against the Giants, can climb back into the picture?

*7. Again, if Osweiler and Kizer both struggle against New York, would the competition for the starting job continue into the Bucs game?

*8. And if that happened and the competition was still in a virtual tie, would the job go to Osweiler based on his experience, or to Kizer based on the fact he was drafted with the idea that he would be given the chance this year to be the franchise quarterback?

*9. Would there be any scenario in which, once the regular season begins, the starting job would be determined by who plays better in practice in the days leading up to each game?

*10. The Browns keep saying that determining the starting quarterback will be an organizational decision, but isn’t that a bad way to do it since Jackson was hired based on the fact he is considered to be an expert on quarterbacks? Shouldn’t he have the final say on this franchise-changing decision over Brown, who comes to his job from a legal background?
